One of India's 28 states plans to distribute 100,000 Linux laptops to students there. It sounds like
Tamil Nadu's volume purchasing agent decided to use Linux exclusively
after being put off by Microsoft's bundling tactics for academic users.

OPEN SOURCE stakeholders, user groups, advocates and enthusiasts across the world will converge in Cebu for the Philippine Open Source Summit (POSS) slated on June 23-24 at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in the Mandaue City. This was announced recently by POSS Summit Director Bonifacio Belen and co-sponsor Global Gateway Venture Capital (G2VC) Managing Director Winston Damarillo. The summit is spearheaded by the Cebu Business Month 2008 ICT Committee.

Sun Microsystems used the opening day of its CommunityOne open source developer conference to release its OpenSolaris Operating System. The new offering was unveiled three years after Sun announced its open-source plan for the Solaris operating system. Alongside, Sun also released the NetBeans Integrated Development Environment Early Access for PHP.

Gartner says open-source operating systems—Linux in particular—have caught up to their fee-based counterparts, but a new report predicts costs will rise as well.
