Sourceforge announced today the launch of their Sourceforge Marketplace--a new service which allow developers and service providers to connect with those who need expertise or services around an open source product and are willing to pay for it.

According to company officials, the new service was put up to provide a means for developers to generate money by supporting users of their projects, customizing them, implementing new features, or providing training. At the same time the site can satisfy people who have been demanding special skills for their particular company requirements.

It remains to be seen if this will be a major source of business for the company who manages Sourceforge--which plans to make a comission for each consumated transaction made through the site. The company, once called VA Software [1], changed its name earlier this year and said it planned to focus on its Web-based businesses, which also includes the popular tech news site Slashdot [2].
