One of India's 28 states plans to distribute 100,000 Linux laptops to students there. It sounds like
Tamil Nadu's volume purchasing agent decided to use Linux exclusively
after being put off by Microsoft's bundling tactics for academic users.

Sun Unveils OpenSolaris OS and NetBeans IDE Early Access for PHP

Sun Microsystems used the opening day of its CommunityOne open source developer conference to release its OpenSolaris Operating System. The new offering was unveiled three years after Sun announced its open-source plan for the Solaris operating system. Func had an interesting beginning. It began not in a whiteboard-lined conference room, but in a small coffeeshop in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Greg DeKoenigsberg, Adrian Likins, Seth Vidal, and I were discussing how to make Linux easier to manage for large install bases. That’s when we came up with the idea for Func.
